Redisign of Benediktsplatz

Benediktsplatz is the central hub of Erfurt's old town, and thus countless tourists come streaming into the square every year to set off from here and explore the historic city centre and its sights. Short distances and urban diversity characterize the square. In order to strengthen its location as the federal state capital and increase its attractivity for visitors and locals, the city of Erfurt conducted a redesign of Benediktsplatz with the aid of ERDF funding.

The project's primary focus was to eliminate urban development deficits, improve living and economic conditions, and upgrade the public space. The inner part of the square was given a new basalt cobblestone paving, and the surface materials of pavements and spaces in front of the buildings were matched to the high-quality paving surfaces of the adjacent streets. Furthermore, tripping hazards in the form of high kerb stops were removed to make it easier for pedestrians with mobility limitations to move around the square. What is more, a new, timeless lighting system was installed, and a new information board along with two benches were set up in front of the tourist information. In addition to the visually perceivable changes, a modernization of the piping systems took place. That included replacing all gas pipes, renewing several new drinking water pipes and moving electrical systems that had been too close to the surface further down.
