Large-scale project Campus Inselplatz Jena

The Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena (FSU), the Free State’s largest university, is getting a new campus on the Inselplatz. In future, the institute of psychology, the computer centre, the faculty of mathematics and computer science, a branch library of the Thuringian University and State Library (ThULB) "Natural Sciences and Preclinical Studies" and also a cafeteria will be accommodated here, right next to the main university building. In addition, the city of Jena will build a new parking garage directly adjoining the computer centre to ease the parking situation.

In order to implement Thuringia's most significant university building project, a long-standing gap between buildings is being closed. However, in planning the new campus, the utmost importance was placed on ensuring the new buildings blend into the cityscape harmoniously. The centralisation of university facilities creates a brilliant new infrastructure defined by short distances and generous, accessible open spaces, providing room for encounters and scientific exchange, which generates improved studying and teaching conditions.

Beyond that, the building's energy efficiency level is to be considerably below the standards of the energy-saving regulation. This high degree of energy efficiency will be achieved by using synergies on the one hand, and on the other hand, generating energy from photovoltaic systems and geothermal probes in addition to using waste heat from the computing centre in all sub-objects.

The building project is an essential step for Friedrich Schiller University, which is considered one of the leading universities in Germany, to increase the attractivity of Jena as a university and science location. The excellent research and teaching conditions post-construction work should ensure the university being placed among the top 20 German universities in the future. This way, a vibrant campus in the centre of the city is created, which will attract scientists and students from all over the world in future and turn Jena into an international centre of innovation and research.

Solemn ceremony of approval

The project's total volume amounts to 188 million euros, of which around €84 million is co-financed by the European Union within the frame of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

The large-scale project Campus Inselplatz Jena was classified by the European Commission as particularly innovative. As part of a festive ceremony, the responsible EU Commissioner, Ms Corina Crețu, presented the large-scale project's approvals to Mr Volker Kurz, Head of the Administration and Certification Authority of the ERDF at the Thuringian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Science and Digital Society..
